Between art and the regime, the talented journey of a restless man
The career of Achille Capizzano (1907–1951) represents a fundamental turning point in Italian culture between the Fascist period and the Reconstruction. A painter, decorator, and mosaicist, Capizzano emerged as a leading figure on the Roman scene, capable of navigating the imperatives of state commissions and a personal lyrical evolution, exploring the essentiality of form and color.
Born in Rende, he moved to Rome in 1923. There he trained under the rigor of Paolo Paschetto, absorbing the canons of the "Return to Order" movement. By 1928, he was working on the decorative cycles for the Ministry of Education, a practical laboratory that propelled him toward large-scale public decoration. The turning point came in 1930 with his meeting with the architect Luigi Moretti. Theirs was an intellectual partnership aimed at unifying the visual arts within the architectural fabric of the capital: together they founded the "Centro d'Arte," where muralism merged with design.
Moretti's influence guided Capizzano toward "abstract spaces" and Renaissance-inspired perspectives, reminiscent of Piero della Francesca. Part of Moretti's inner circle, Capizzano frequented the studio on Via Panisperna, meeting talents such as Mafai, Gentilini, and Tamburi. The most celebrated legacy of this period remains at the Foro Italico, where Capizzano created the black-and-white floor mosaics that still define its symbolic axis today.
Yet, beyond the gigantic nature of the E42 project, the Maestro cultivated an intimate evolution of essential forms and vibrant colors, culminating in the spectral monotypes of his later years. Capizzano's critical reception has evolved considerably: honored with a solo exhibition at the 1954 Venice Biennale, he remained in academic obscurity for decades due to his connection to the works of the regime.
Today, thanks to recent historical rereadings and the unwavering commitment of the MAON Museum in Rende, critics have repaid the Maestro's work. Capizzano is finally recognized as a "transversal" interpreter, capable of maintaining a clear vision of truth even in the complex context of totalitarianism, confirming himself as one of the most illustrious and modern sons of Calabria. A central figure in understanding the uninterrupted dialogue between the great tradition of the Renaissance and the language of modernism.
